Housing in Thailand
One of the first things you will need is a place to live. As foreigner it is important to know what is available to you and what prices you can expect. Personally would recommend to rent a room at an hotel for a month and look around what is available and make a well informed decision. Location is everything. To move around can be a big problem with a car, Bangkok is well known for its traffic jams.
Lucky enough there are some good alternatives to the car. The Sky train (BTS) and the underground (MRT) make it very easy to move around within the central district of Bangkok. It is quite important to look for a location close to a BTS or MRT station.
Beside location other factors can play a role in the decision making process, for example:
So what is available in terms of housing:
When renting:
-
Condominium / Apartment (5,000-25,000 Baht)
-
Town Houses (Between 15,000-35,000 Baht/Mont)
-
Houses (between 20,000-100,000 Baht/Month)
-
Service Apartment (25,000-100,000 Baht)
-
Hotels (15,000-150,000 Baht)
Buying:
In terms of buying their are not many options. The Thai law prevents foreigners from owning land expect in some special cases or if you buy the property in a Thai business name.
-
Condominium / Apartment (1,500,000-30,000,000 Baht)
When buying a condominium be aware of the options that are available to you (See also Condominium Law ). For example you might buy a Condo if you have proof of residence (Visa + Work Permit) . Problem with this do is that when you move out of Thailand you have to Sell the condo. To buy a Condominium in your own name it is better to buy it based on investment. For this you have to have proof that you transferred an x amount of money form overseas to Thailand with the intention to buy the condominium. To get proof of this you have to go to the main office of the bank you transferred the money to. |
